About Us

Flowers of Hatch started as an experiment in 2006. It went very well and people liked it so we increased the number of varieties and extended our opening times for 2007. We added the sunflower maze and grassed some paths. We also bought our summerhouse, which serves as a notice board and a store for picking tools and wrapping materials.

This year we have even more varieties and more area under cultivation. We sowed a wildflower meadow which will hopefully be worth seeing although it should be better next year. The birds had quite a lot of the seed though...

We are still learning about which varieties work and about how to get a continuous supply of interesting flower varieties from May to September. As time goes on our perennial varieties will become more established and productive.

What is it about?
Flowers of Hatch is principally about giving people a good excuse to come and visit a beautiful part of the world without having to spend much (or any) money. Feel free to wander around the flower field and take in the views. You can have a picnic in the field, the children can run around or try out the sunflower maze. If you want to take some flowers home, and we obviously hope you will, just pay for what you take, scissors and wrapping materials are provided.

Organic?
We aren't soil association certified and will probably not go for official organic status. It seems quite a moveable feast anyway. What we do say is that we use no toxins to control pests or weeds. For some of our beds to get a reasonable crop of flowers we will use a minimum of artificial fertiliser. We will use organic fertiliser (dung!) where we can. Our location provides us with plenty of this.
